Angry triton v8 engine seized/blowout ???

Had the oil changed a few days ago. The other day, I was driving and the oil gage started to go up and down, then the oil light came on and as I was slowing down to a stop sign the engine died. Tried to start again to no avail. The engine was turning but it did not start. Waited about 10 minutes, tried to start but by this time the battery seemd to give out. Someone stopped and we jump started the truck and it seemed ok. Drove about 5 miles and the oil light came right back and this time the oil gauge went all the way to zero. Slowed down as I was hearing a squeeky metalic noise and the egine just died again. This time though, it did not start anymore Checked the oil on the stick OK...now what ???
Called a tow truck, took to a Ford dealership...bad news, engine is seized, they don't know yet exactly why but basically told me I need a new engine. Quoted me $3K for the new engine and
$ 500 to $800 labor.
This is a 1998 F150 xlt extended cab, had the oil changed every 3k miles and has about 160 k miles on it.
What could have cause this ? Isn't the computer supposed to cut off the engine before it just melts and seizes ? Any other option to consider before replacing engine ? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

Probally oil pump failure. Unfortunatly you have no other option other than to replace the engine with either a used or rebuilt one, since the original one was destroyed from a lack of lubrication.
