Q- about the notorious 4.6 engine ping

At full throttle my 98' f-150 4.6 liter pings like a mf'r .I read on a reply about a dirty TBI being the culprit . This is really bothering me bad , please help !!I have tried octane booster along with gas treatment for the last 2 tanks of gas if it matters .

I also have a '98 4.6. Never had any pinging troubles.

Certainly a dirty mass air meter could cause a pinging problem. You didn't say how many miles are on truck and whether all fuel system maintenance has been done. Mass air meter wires can be cleaned by spraying them with brake cleaner. Give us some more info on this truck..........does this only happen on very hot and humid days under wot or on all days at wot.

Also, is this truck stock or not.

72,000- Just started tune up. No fuel system maintenence except for the fuel filter . Same spark plugs . -which I'm going to do soon-
Hot or humid days don't apply . Everything is stock . So brake cleaner for TBI is a good start ?I'd appreciate a link if you know of one off hand .I've had the truck since day one and this is the ONLY time its even given me a problem /GO FORD/Thanks, hope this is enought info ....I'll check back in regularly.

The EGR system is designed to prevent pinging. Some engines also have knock sensors that detect pinging. Pinging can be a sign of a lean fuel mixture...

Bad news brother, I have had this ping
since 18,000 miles and I haven't been
able to fix it yet. I know guys that run
87 octane and never have a problem
and I run 93 and I still pings at times.
I cleaned the MAF wires once when it was really bad but that just got me back to the usual ping. The dealer by the
way told me it was normal and I told
him I won't buy another 4.6 in anything,
because I had the same in a Crown Vic
and a Town car and they both did it.

Hi, just carousing the board and read this. It made me wonder if a good tuner might help such as what Troyer provides. I use the SCT 9100 and it made a world of difference to my 5.4L. It might help a 4.6L just as well. Anyway, just a thought…

'99 F150 Scab, 4l6L, auto, 141K miles. I had pinging with Citgo 87 octane; switched to Chevron 87, still pinged but not as much. Went to Chevron 89 and "ping be gone". You might try another brand of gasoline.

I have also recent began adding 8 ounces of acetone to every other full tank. LUBEDEV.COM has some articles on acetone and its affects on gasoline and the articles discourage the use of alchohol. Acetone is rated at 150 octane by itself; my mileage testing is continuing.

Pinging

My 98 expedition 4.6 does the same thing.Mine has 76000 miles
It didn't do it till around 50K.I have done routine maintenance as well on mine.I run 87/89/92 and pings.Tried techron went away but soon came back.I am afraid that the head gaskets will go soon or a piston or valve.I have also cleaned the MAF sensor, no change.I do think its the right bank pinging and the dealer told me either an O2 sensor is going bad because the a/c drain hose runs right over the O2.So what is the fix for this POS.I will never buy another 4.6 again.I have read on an explorer site that a guy installed a tuner and his pinging problem went away.I wonder if that would help the 4.6 as well.

hey guys my dad's 97 towncar did the same exact thing, ping under load. Tried changing plugs, wires, fuel injection cleaning, cleaning MAF to no avail. What cured it finally? A new MAF sensor, cost about $130 but the thing never pinged again even in 95 weather. Try swapping a new one in, it was the best $130 ever spent. Too much pinging can ruin a motor.

my 98 4.6 wtih 71,000 miles pings lightly under alot of different conditions, but mainly cooler/cold weather pulling hills.
Did fuel filter/plug change/MAF cleaning/K*N filter cleaning about 10,000 miles ago and it ran like a scalded dog for about 1,000 miles, then went back to pinging, but not as bad as before.

Do a search on Seafoam treatments. Youll read about alot of positive things about running seafoam thru the vaccum hose located just under the master cylinder and also thru your fuel system.

The pinging 4.6 is a long old problem on this board.

I noticed in all of the above posts that none of you have cleaned the egr ports and tubes which if you do a search here is the primary cause of pinging in the 4.6.
