service engine light

Hello,

I have a 2001 F-150 with the 4.6L and 80,000 miles. The engine check light came on and I took it to an Auto Zone and they told me it was the EGR. They also recommended that I run premium in it and add some injector cleaner to the gas. The engine check light went off but the minute I filled it up with regular gas it went on again. Any idea what would be causing this. Is there a quick fix or do I need to replace the EGR?

I was also wondering if anyone has had experience with the K & N air filter knock offs. There are products that are similar that are $50.00 on e-bay that come with an aluminum intake and reusable air cleaner. Are these any good?

Thanks

Doug S.

I would start by cleaning/or replacing the EGR valve. In addition tothis, I would suggest that you clean the EGR ports on the throttle body assembly. You also need to check the PCV valve line on the backside of the intake. If you choose to run premium gas in your truck, you will be adding more crud to the engine, as these engined are made to run on 87 octane. Do a search on EGR ports and you will find lots of helpful info.

don't replace the egr valve yet. it is rarely the problem. it is very common for the egr ports on the 4.6 to get clogged. do a search here and you will even get great pics on how to clean the ports. and make sure that you do not use carb cleaner.

high octane is fine every now and then but it is not reccomended. and there for shouldn't be used.
