Better mpg on non-reformulated gas
Better mpg on non-reformulated gas
Hi all,
I live in Milwaukee Wisconsin - home of the rip-off reformulated gasoline areas. My 2001 F-150 SuperCrew gets about 15-16 mpg from an all freeway driven tank of gas. When I go up north, like I just did this past weekend I fill up there and I got 20 mpg all freeway driving. My neighbor drives a NON FORD PRODUCT, and has the same experience. That is such a rip. Sheboygan is the closest county with non-reformulated gas but it is not worth the trip - it's 45 minutes away. Just wondering if anyone in a non-reformulated area gets the same mpg?

In California, we have MTBE laden 'reformulated' crap for gas. When I road trip to Nevada once a year or so, my MPG goes up at least 10% and more like 20%. It's hard to tell for sure as my mileage varies alot anyways, and it is mostly highway miles when I get a chance to get out of state fuel. I am convinced that our Ford trucks suffer a serious mileage penalty on low energy content 'clean' fuel.
IMO, the whole thing is a big sham. Maybe my truck pollutes 10% less per gallon, but I burn 10% more fuel and my gas is 20% more expensive. Same difference to the environment, but big $$$ out of my pocket.

You got it. The reformulated gas burns cleaner and gets crappy milage.
I live in Atlanta where we have the "cleaner" gas. I get 14-15 arround town and 17-18 on the road. I have a farm in South GA. After I fill up down there (and reset the computer) I get 15-16 running arround and 19-21 on the road. I have tried out my thoery by hauling a 55 gal drum of normal gas to Atlanta and I get the "improved" results of higher milage.
Got to love the EPA and CARB.
