po' boy

Hello guys/gals I'm new to the forum and have a couple of questions. I just bought a 98 f-150 (big upgrade from a 94 ranger )from an older man who kept the truck in very nice condition. The only problem is I noticed a fairly loud clicking sound when im on the gas it sounds like it coming from the engine somewhere but since i have NO vehicle knowledge so im in the dark. It seems to be worse when the AC is on. I know there isnt much detail in this post but i hope i can get a response about what it might be, i dont have the money right now to take it to the shop for them to diagnose it so i figure this is the nest best thing. right?

thanks,

corey

Yo... Po',

We don't know what engine you have or how many miles on the odometer. You say the seller had taken "good care" of the truck. Do you have receipts for work done on the truck? How often was the oil changed? What type of oil was used?

Witthout hearing the "ticking" sound, I'll assume it's not too serious. The first place I'd start is the oil and filter. I'd reccomend synthetic oil (I use Mobil1 5W-30) unless you have high mileage driven on "dino" oil. And a Motocraft FL-820S with an anti-drainback valve is a must (at minimum) . Give us more info. I'm sure someone will be able to help.

i have receipts of all the oil changes done on the truck and it shows he has been putting valvoline 10w30. the oil changes were all changed before it showed to be needed. thanks

The 4.6 is notorious for pinging. Try doing a search for cleanig the throttle body egr ports. Its a simple job and really helps.

Thumbs up

Change the oil, and use the proper weight this time. It could possibly help. He's been using the wrong viscosity(too heavy) for years apparently. Correct weight is 5W/30. Good luck.,,,,98

Could be pinging also. Does it sound like a can full of BB's in a paint mixer?
