Question Check Engine Codes 171 and 174

The engine is misfiring and these are the codes that I got from the scanner. Banks 1 and 2 running lean. I already change both the air and fuel filters and added to the gas tank a fuel injectors cleaner. Still misfiring, I am wondering if the fuel injector lines are clogged. Looking for past experience on this matter. Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like a vacuum leak and a very common problem on the 5.4 engine. Mine did it at about 75,000 miles. First place to look is at the back of the manifold against the firewall. Trace the pcv hose from the valve cover to the entrance into the manifold. You'll have to do this by hand as it's impossible to see back there. There is a 90 degree boot that connects the hose to the manifold that wears out and causes a vacuum leak. With the engine running, feel back there and see if you can feel the leak. It will actually suck your finger if it's leaking. If it is, then get a replacement from the dealer. Cost is around $25.00 which includes a new hose, elbow and PCV valve. Hopefully this takes care of your problem. Good luck.

JMTruck,

MaxTorque02 gave you good advice above. Check out that PCV vacuum hose for leakage. It is a very commn problem on the Modular engines. Check for other vacuum leaks as well. Since you have a K&N FIPK you should clean your MAF sensor. The oil from its' reusable air filter has been known to "foul" the MAFs and cause a lean condition.

Good Luck,
Bill

Unhappy

Well, it is the PCV vacuum hose at the elbow. Went to a Ford Store nearby and they ordered one from another store. It costs 80.00 but they can give me a lower price of 60.00.

Back to my house and to the internet to check for better pricing. Not been able to find the part #F85E-6C324-AA. I can wait a few days before getting the hose locally. Any ideas will be appreciated

The PCV valve and hose assembly was only 20 bucks for my 97 5.4 . 60 dollars seems way high..

I had the same problem and found this thread using the search function...

Just wanted to say thank you... I replaced the hose and the problems went away....
22 dollars with tax in Louisiana....

Luckily with the van it was easy to get to.... but the coil over plug coils were a real pain.....

Is there a way to reset the ses light without a code reader?

Pull the Battery Terminal an turn on you lights. That will drain any power in the wires... Wait 5 minutes hook it back up.

I had the same problem also, and I just want to say thank you. JmTruck I checked the part number that you gave with my local dealer and they qouted me $44.00. If you just need the elbow piece, I'm sure you can find something like a boot to a coil or a pcv elbow.
Good luck.

Thumbs up

Finally, with the help of a friend that works at Dollar Car Rental she got me the part for $48.00 through their main supplier. I will get it tomorrow. That's close to Joselito's price, so, being in PR and all the shipping and bla bla blá I think it's OK.

Thanks to all for all the information we were able to gather here.

I put a three-dollar new PCV valve and code went away. I got it at AutoZone I think.
