quick questoin. i might be paranoid but better safe than sorry. i noticed today that with my window open i can her a noise that was not there....or atleast not noticed before. it is a a taping that is quick and in rythm with rpms. i only notice it during idle and with the window open. i can't here it with the window closed or when moving. it is not too loud but definitly noticable.

i don't know what piston slap sounds like...but i am just checking. i have read a lot of posts on piston slap with the 5.4's. my truck is an 03 5.4l with 20K on the odometer. completely stock.

INjectors can make a pretty good racket. Have had some people run into a problem with egr leaks but with an '03 with only 20k Mi I would not think that is it. sorry can't really think of much else that would be like you described.

 

The 2003 5.4 has more spark plug threads, so it shouldn't be a loose/blown plug. It's not likely piston slap, and if it was, you should get more noise on start up. It is common to get some injector noise. It could also be an exhaust leak. You're just going to have to narrow it down. Listen to the injectors individually and look/listen for signs of exhaust leaks.
