Exxon gas and Ford Injectors...
As many of you have read, I have been having a misfire for several months. I tried everything that you suggested, but could not get rid of the miss. A friend of mine told me a story about him and his dad both having Ford Tauruses (Tauri?) and having a missing problem that they could not find. Just so happens that they were using Exxon fuels, exclusively. A friend of his dad's was a ford mechanic, and told his dad that if he changed fuels to something other than Exxon, the miss would go away. Well, they changed fuels and the miss did go away!
During the misfiring of my truck, I stayed as consistant with Exxon as I could, about 9/10 tanks. I would stray to another brand as I was doing some changes (coil, fuel filter, etc.) The miss would go away for about 4 days - a tank of gas.
I heard that Exxon additives and Ford injectors do not work well together. Something about the additives.
My question is, is anyone else experiencing this issue? Changing fuels has cured my miss issue for nearly two weeks now!!!
Please let me know your experience and the fuel you are using.
Thanks!!!

As an FYI: THe fuel used in the states is all the same - it just has different additve packages added at the tank farm and those packages differ regionally and by the brand tank truck that is filling. The various tank farms all get their gas from the same pipeline. It is good to try a differnt high detergent fuel (or additive) to keep a cleaner running engine.
This was explained to me by an engineer friend of mine that tests the fuel mixes that leave the Doraville Tank Farm in N. Atlanta.

Since Mobil is owned by Exxon, does this mean the gas additives are the same ? I use either Exxon or Mobil and I see no problems, but I notice my gas mileage is worse then when I use Shell. I noticed when I use Shell my gas mileage increases 1-2 miles per gallon. Maybe I'm imagining things????

Track you milage with type of driving (city vs. milage), time of year (temp), type of gas and octane rating. You may see all kind of trends.
Shell
I just moved to Seattle (Queen Anne area) and there are a number of Shell stations close to me and no Chevron's...I've noticed pinging when I climb hills with Shell fuel and a slight decrease in mileage in my '97 4.6 F150.
I have been running primarily exxon (some mobil) for the past 4 years (Speed pass) and my truck runs like a top. Most of the time I buy the gas it is in MD but I have purchased exxon in PA, NY (NYNY), NJ, DE, and VA which I know from working with the carriers my gas has come from atleast 3 different refineries.
So I do not think that Exxon/Mobil additives have anything to do with your injectors. Most gas these days with the exception of really cheap stuff has so much detergent in it it is unlikely to cause injector problems. I would hazzard to guess there is something wrong with your truck.

I had a similar problem with Chevron gas in my Ranger. If I ran more than a tank of Chevron, I would get a miss. Took me a while to make the correlation and when I avoided Chevron gas I never had a miss. I ran Shell and 76.
I sure appreciate your replies. I have tried many things to get rid of the miss. Switching from Exxon gas cured the problem. And I do mean cured. Three weeks without a miss!!! If you read my other saga, I did everything that was suggested, but no cure to the miss.... "https://www.f150online.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=159900"
Why does avoiding Exxon fuels make the miss go away???
I need to understand this. Any help that you can give will be appreciated!!!

Try asking that q. on the chip bd. Its been said that Exxon is a clean burning fuel but the energy content is low.
When I was experimenting w/diff. fuels, I got just abit less mpg w/Exxon, also felt like very slight drop in HP, but no missing. Results as you may know, vary.
Good luck...OT
