Cost of an engine swap
Cost of an engine swap
Hey everyone I am new here and I need some help. I have a 1999 F-150 XL 4.6L and it has 141,000 miles and I am starting to feel the effects with poor mileage and little power. So my question is how much would you guess that the entire swap to a 5.4L would be to do it my self and how much to have it done? Also if anyone has more info or knows exactly what I will need to do in addition to the engine that would be helpful. Thanks
I doubt the engine is on its way out.
There are many things you can do to make sure your engine is in good shape...replace the spark plugs and wires, O2 sensors, fuel filter, air filter, etc etc etc...
This would be much cheaper than an engine swap.
There are a few threads in these forums about it, do a search.

I have a '99 w/ 4.6L with 132k miles on it. It was starting to feel a little sluggish so I figured it needed a tune up. I got the troyer ignition upgrade kit. It really made a noticeable improvement. Much better acceleration, throttle response, gas mileage, etc. The improvement is really noticeable when it's cold, I didn't realize how much power I had lost due to worn out coils and wires. You might try it before getting another motor.
Anyone accidentally know the answer to the original question asked? I'd be intrested to know aswell. (It does not seem many of us have gotten to the point of doing a rebuilt or engine swap with the exception of those that have replaced the head due to spark plug blowouts.)
Headbanger - if your spark plugs, plug wires, coil packs, and filters have not been swapped out you will be impressed with the difference (which will cost less then $250 if you do it yourself.)

The post rocketir refers to would be mine. I did the swap from a 1998 4.6 to a 2001 5.4. I kept my original ignition (coil packs and plugs). If I had tried to change to COP, I would have had to replace the PCM and wiring harness, and multiple other items. Once I had the swap done and running I hooked up with Mike Troyer and got a Superchip. Three rounds of tuning and it runs awesome.
Does your F150 have COP or Coil Packs?
Call Mike Troyer if you have questions about tuning.
Good luck!!!

The blocks on those are great. If I were you, I would do everything mentioned above regarding tuning and sensors, but I would just take the heads in, get em pressure tested, resurfaced and at lest new exhaust valves and sleeves. Your exhaust valves are done w/ tthat many miles. Get new seals on all the valves and have the intakes reseated. It'll run like a new rig. With a new tall block, you're going to shell out between $2 and 4,000, then you're going to want to put new everything on it..sensors, water pump, cap rotor wires, etc. You're not going to want to put the old stuff on the shiny new motor! And after you pay all that out, the rest of the truck still had a buck-forty on the odometer and other stuff is likely to go before you reach 200,000. I'd give the new engine thing a lot of thought. Good luck! --Jim
