intake kit or airbox mod?
Obviously building your own would be much cheaper. If you're willing to pay $200-$300 for an intake like AirForceOne or K&N that have thrown mad cash at R&D to improve performance then I would recommend going that route.
I have a K&N FIPK II and love it.

I went with the ICEMAN cold air intake, because I had a K-N filter and this kit uses the factory housing. This way when you change filters you can clean the dirty one and let it dry naturally then reoil it and you are ready for the next time.
