Talking CEL P0401 Finally fixed. Not the way you think!

In my previous posts I had talked about cleaning the plenum, replacing the EGR, replacing the DPFE but the code would not clear.

I took the truck to a local dealer to ask for some tips.

They said that the vacuum line to the EGR solenoid seemed to have week vacuum so start there. Of course they could tell me what the problem is if I give them some money to hook it up to the machine, after I schedule an appointment......

Started tracing vacuum lines, and found some heading into the right side fender.

Now I have to remove the tire and fender liner. Up underneath, inside the fender is some kind of large plastic canister. Not sure what it is for but there are five (5) vacuum lines running to it. What I found was that there was a small 1/8” hole drilled in the front of the canister.

I had just gotten my truck out of the body shop, due to a lady who decided to cut me off....her fault not mine..

What I think happened is when they were replacing the front fascia/trim of the truck they needed to do some drilling to get the new parts mounted.

Filled in the hole with some RTV and let it dry overnight.

Put everything back together and presto... no CEL 401

This one was a head scratcher.....

I plan on taking the truck back to the Ford dealer where I had the body work done and letting them know of this. I don't expect to get reimbursed for parts that I did not need or anything, just want them know be more careful next time....

Just think,, if I had taken the truck into the dealer to fix the problem, I would not have had to pay for it. They would, since they CAUSED the problem...

shipkiller,

Congrats! That was a good bit of detective work. Interesting post.

Just think, if I had taken the truck into the dealer to fix the problem, I would not have had to pay for it. They would, since they CAUSED the problem...

Do you really think they would have admitted it was their fault?

Well, I had did not have any problems with the truck before their repair, and the hole was DEFENITLY not part of the plastic vacuum can. And the angle of the hole is in line with the mounting screws of the front fascia, where the fascia and fender meet. Logically, (pointed ears come out) the hole was produced by the dealership.
Now do I think anything will be done? NOPE
