If you are going to follow the manufactures filter schedule than do the same for the oil. If you can afford a new truck, but cant afford the filter then your priorities are already screwed up.
Me, I figured out how to mod a Bud can to fit with wads of paper towels, no more $ wasted on filters here..

This is how I look at it. Change oil and filter together everytime. If I was ever to do one without the other I would do just the filter and not the oil. Heres why,, you are filtering the dirt and sludge out of the oil, why put new oil in with a dirty clogged up filter, just put a new filer in to clean the oil thats already in there.
Like I said, I would never do one without the other, but if someone told me I had to, then thats what I would do.
Just my 2cents.

I personally recommend changing your oil and filter every 3000 miles and no more than 5000.
If you insist on trying to save money then I'd recommend changing only your filter and adding the difference (about 3/4 quart).
FYI: Oil filters have a built in bypass; all the oil that flows through the filter does not flow through the filter element. The more dirt/particles your oil filter element captures the more oil will flow around the filter element.
Example:
A new oil filter will filter about 50% of passing oil.
A 5000 mile old filter will only filter about 25% of passing oil.
It all ends up getting filtered eventually anyways, but the older the filter the longer it takes to clean the oil. Unless the filter becomes totally plugged which under normal conditions would take about 8000-10000 miles.
On my truck I have two FL-1A oil filters instead of the one stock FL-820S. I installed a Perma-Cool dual oil filter relocation kit. Not only is one FL-1A filter bigger than a FL-820S, but now I have two so my oil changes are 6 quarts... plus now they're located in an easier spot to change.
If anyone's interested in a relocation kit it costs about $50. Let me know and I'll tell you exactly what you need and all the thread sizes for a 5.4L 3V truck.
* Don't buy the universal kit.
