Oil change questions

I have 26K on my 2002 Screw and I need to change oil. I'm thinking of using Mobil 1 synthetic or Valvoline synthetic 5W20. Would this be a wise choice? I live in South Dakota so it gets warm in the summertime but frigid in the winter. Am I OK to keep the same kind of weight all season? I plan on sticking with one brand of oil throughout the life of the truck as I hear it is easier on the engine. Any comments?

You are going to get a million responses to this question. everyone has an opinion ( check some of the other oil threads, they can go a couple of hundred replies.) I use syn. oil because of the extreme service. I go 2-3 hundred miles a day mostly in traffic. Several starts and stops. Have seen syn. oil to be better under the extremes. I try to change every 10K mi. or so( about once every 6 weeks) no noticable build up on dipstick or oil cap. Once oil changed it is clean and clear until it gets time to change it agian.

OK I finally settled on AMSOIL 5W30 from a dealer here in town and I picked up a Motorcraft filter from Walmart. I went to take a look at where the oil filter was located so I'd be ready to change it tomorrow. Do you have to take off that plastic shroud underneath the oil filter in order to drain the oil out(I have a 4x4)? It seems like it would be messy if the oil dripped straight down.

if you just spin the filter out a few turns the oil will drain on to the little spill guard and then in to the pan. this is if the filter is on the block.

Thanks. I thought about that too but I wasn't sure. All the other vehicles I've owned I was just able to pull the filter off and have it drip straight down so I was pretty easy before.

Chroma,

Good choice on the oil, I would reccomend using a top shelf filter though. With an Amsoil filter, it is reccommended that you change the filter at 6 month intervals. With a regular off the shelf filter it's said to need changed more often.

The longest part of an oil change for me USED to be changing the filter. I recently added an oil filter relocator kit and it is great! I also added a Fumoto oil valve and that was worth the cost the first time I used it! I can truly do a 5 minute oil change now, with NO mess!!!

twistedfinn, where did you get your oil relocator kit at? and the valve? Since I will be doing all of the oil changes, it would be nice to have better access to the filter. Is there any loss in performance or efficiency? Next time I will get an Amsoil filter but I had bought the Motorcraft a week before the I got the oil so I thought I would use it first and then switch to the Amsoil.
