v10 smokes on start up
v10 smokes on start up
It is my fathers car and he puts this really really cheap oil in it. Do you think that is the problem? The oil doesn't stick to the metal after about 5 min of sit time. I mean it is smoking REALLY bad on start up
please help

Blue smoke = oil
White smoke = steam
You get the steam from either condensation in the exhaust system, or water being introduced into the combustion chamber.
Condensation in the exhaust is normal. Water in the combustion chamber is a problem.....
Check the coolant level and if you are having to add coolant on a regular basis, then it's leaking into the cylinders somehow....
Good luck!

Here is a way to test for leaking coolant into your cylinders. Its somewhat of a pain, but it'll let you know for sure.
1) Remove all of your spark plugs
2) Pressurize your cooling system with a pump that attaches in place of your radiator cap to about 16 psi.
3) Wait about and 1.5 hr or 2
4) Have someone crank the engine with the plugs still removed
If you see water coming out of your cylinders then you have found your problem cylinder(s)

A slightly easier way to test is go to a shop with an exhaust gas analyzer and while the truck is running put the probe into the rad/and or the overflow tank. if it picks up any traces of exhaust you have a bad head gasket.
also the primary emission on a cold start up is water and a big v-10 will make a lot of water on start up and if driven on primarily short trips it will never get hot enough to boil the water out.
give us more details on your white smoke. is it only at start up? how long does it last, etc.
FYI there are about 10 different colors of "smoke" that can come out of these trucks.

Another "test" for a blown head gasket that is pretty easy is to take the rad cap off on a COLD engine and then start it up. Look through the neck and if you see bubbles, then it's a good chance you've got a gasket issue......
I've seen it go the other way too.... No bubbles, but the engine had a crack in the head (on the wifes car). So, it did not do anything until it heated up. Then all the additional pressure would end up in the rad and it ran crappy and hot. The temp gauge would go really high, then the stat would open and it would cool down again and just back and fort like that.... Never did see any evidence of water in the oil whoever.....
You won't see that kind of activity on these Ford temp gauges, but just tossing something else out there........
Good luck!
