Higher amp alternator bad?
Higher amp alternator bad?
I just purchased a higher amp alternator from a guy who had it on his stang. Its a 150amp alternator. Mine is the 130 amp on the ORP 4x4. Will I have any problems with the higher amperage?
The only problem you would encounter, is if the red lead(s) from the alternator to the battery are too small. With a 130A alternator you may already have a large enough gauge. I would
suspect you would need a 2/0 gauge cable to the battery. In addition, run a 2/0 black cable from battery neg. to ground. As I said, though, you may already meet that requirement.
An alternator will only supply what is required of it. It doesn't inject a random number of amps. A 150A alternator is rated as such, because it can supply that amount of current at a certain rpm range...bigger is better in the case of an alternator. An alternator of 150A may supply all the current you need at near idle, it just depends on the number of electrical accessories you have. I hope this helps you.

Shouldn't be any problem. As long as mountings and connections are the same.
Just because an alternator is rated at a higher amperage doesn't mean it will put more output all the time. It will only come into play when the demand to recharge the battery or maintain it is casused by a high draw or very low battery. This is the only time an alternator is called on to be at maximum output.
