Welcome ! E-fans are a proven way to reduce parasitic drag from your engine. You'll get to use the horsepower and mileage will be improved. Are they worth the money???....It will take a long time to pay for them based on mileage. There are many opinions and fan variations, so, you can assimilate information quickly searching the archives.

the E-fans i put on were alittle more $ then that and i feel they were worth every penny. it gives alot more room for changing the belt. turns on with a/c to pull air through the condensor. frees up power. and is alot quiter then the clutch fan. if you ever do water crossings you can simply turn them off with a toggle switch. the mileage gain i got was only 1 mpg on the highway. maybe more in the city when they would have to turn on more.

now if you have alot of off road accessories i.e. lights and other things to make the alternator work harder. e-fans might be to many amps without other electrical mods. my lights do dim just long enough for me to notice at night when the fans turn on. but they come right back to normal brightness once the alternator catches up. 118k mile alternator so i might be needing a new one.

I used the Troyer kit and I think it was worth it.

Gained mileage but pay back would be in about 40000 miles or more. I did the math awhile ago but don't recall the answer. It frees up power and is quite noticeable in passing. Do a search in the "other aftermarket' forum for more comments.

Bigtruck,

I would loose the 160° T-stat. I run a 180° and that is about as low as you want to go. These engines need heat to run properly. I play in the Dunes in Michigan and although it is not as hot as California the temps can get close to 100°F. I have a custom chip that allows my truck to rev to 6500 rpm and I run between 4000 6500 rpm all day long with no ill effects using electric fans. I have the Troyer kit and I wired in a master kill for water crossings and individual turn on switches in case the controllers fail.

Regards

I guess there two ways to get more power. One is to properly tune the Engine via the PCM chip for the actual conditions that are present and one is to try to trick the PCM. Hypertec uses a lower temp thermostat to lower under hood temps so the PCM will see colder air coming in and adjust accordingly. Less code writing involved.

The only thing you will regret about putting e' fans on your truck is that you waited to do it. They are great and especially with other mods.

I agree with dumping the 160F thermostat. It's great if you are going to take it to the drag strip, but for optimum performance your coolant should be running around 200F. Go back to the stock one.

I installed the Troyer dual 16" E-fan kit. It was $385 delivered to my door and worth every penny. I'm in San Diego so some of the drive was easing my wallet at the gas pump. I only get about 1mpg better, but my truck drives like it's 1000 lbs lighter. Now it almost glides at (and maybe slightly above) freeway speeds. The power gains are very noticeable. I can't believe I waited this long to do it.

It's a '97 5.4L 2x4 but I still take it off-road in the hills and desert. In the desert the temp needle never goes above half. In the hills I bounced around so hard that my intake broke off of my throttlebody, but the fans are still mounted tight as ever.

I can't recommend enough getting electric fans, especially the Troyer dual 16" kit.
