Doesn't Turnover...

Hi Guys,

I have a 03 SCrew with the 5.4L engine, and recently its been acting retarded when I start it. It'll take a few turns of the key to get the thing to turn over and get going. Now it doesnt do this all the time, today it started fine on a cold start this morning. But after about a half hour/hour of driving, it took three turns of the key. Sometimes its vice versa, all the time, or not at all. It has been getting more frequent however.

I only have 10K miles on it, and I'm taking it to the dealer this week to see what the heck is up. Does anyone here have any ideas before I take it in?

Thanks

Justin

Weird.

I can only guess IAC (idle air control), dirty MAF sensor or bad gasoline.

Nope... it seems to run fine aside from the starting issues.

justin,

I would check your battery connections, remove the terminals and clean and replace them.
Try starting the truck with your headlights on and have someone watch them to see if they go out when the truck does one of it's fits (sure sign the terminals are dirty).
Next be sure the heavy wire that runs from the battery to the start solenoid and then on down to the starter has good connections on all the connection points of the above items. Remove and clean all connections that look like they could be dirty or loose.
If all the above doesn't resolve the problem it's more than likly your starter is giving-up-the-ship.

Check the main red lead to the starter they have been known for being crap right from the factory. The connector on the end corrodes. I would think ford would have fixed this problem by 2003 but hey who knows check it.

Im having this problem with my 98 F150 w/ the 5.4L it takes anywhere from 3-5 seconds for it start, sometimes i have to turn the key twice, and other times i hear a what sounds like a gear grinding noise, its loud and hi-pitched and it wont start. I think the +4 plugs i have is one of the contributing factors to bad starts. but its getting worse, the engine idles rough sometimes and on a cold mornings (i live in Az cold morning are few &far between) it knocks like crazy. Any ideas? Could it be the COP acting up?
