Please help!!! Starts and then dies - will not idle.

I've got a 99 F-150 XLT with the 5.4. Yesterday morning I got into the truck to go to breakfast and when I started it, she revved up like nomal and then just died. I did this several times and if you give it gas it will idle fine. As soon as you let off of the gas it will die. I decided to put it in drive and by the time I went 50 yards she was back to normal. Later the same day, I started it up and it idled really rough and really hesitated when starting from a complete stop but once you got going it felt normal. After a quick trip on the highway everything was back to normal. Fast forward to today and It is again stalling unless you give it gas but this time it will not stop. Any ideas????????????

A vacuum hose is leaking or has become disconnected.

IAC (idle air control) valve.

The fuel filter is clogged.

Bad spot on the TPS sensor.

How many miles on the truck and when did you last have your fuel filter changed?

Hopefully you will get a check engine light soon.

Common problem.
95% of the time your IAC is fouled.

You can clean it or replace it, the dealer will charge you about $70 to change it out.

Search this Forum for (IAC) you will get hundreds of threads just like this.

The IAC was on back order when my truck was doing this.
I gave it a few good whacks, it unstuck and I idled fine.

If you hit it and can idle afterwards, that pretty much points to the culprit without a doubt.

I will agree that it sounds like an IAC problem, but I guarantee the dealer will charge more than $70. A new IAC from Ford will run you around $125. You can get them from NAPA or someplace similar for aroung $50.

You can try removing it and cleaning it with throttle body cleaner. I would change it myself, especially considering how much of a pain it is to remove on the 5.4.
