Howdy
Just picked up a 1990 4X4 with a 302. It has 143,000 miles

Thing is getting about 8.5 MPG and seems to be running rich. Took it to local shadetree mech. today thinking it was the O2 sensors but he said it wasn't. He said it had 1 old code stored, something to do with reading the Octane(?)

The truck seems to run fine other then the gas milage. Any ideas?

 

What symptoms other than MPG do you have to make you think it is running rich?

 

Well........................ I'm no mech. so I'm relying on the the fella i took it to ta give me good advise. Also it has an weird smell from exhaust, kinda pungent-acidy smell. He said the smell made him think so.

Also previous ownner said it was running rich. He just forgot to mention the "great" gas milage it was getting.
