how to tell the difference between a 302 and a 351w
My buddy has a late 60s f 100. It does not have the original engine or trans. he thinks it a 302 but it could also be a 351w.
I know a 351w is taller (39") but forgot where to measure. Also under the intake is a casting # and will say 302 or 351 but he does not want to take off the intake yet.
so how else can you tell the difference?
He has a Lincoln with a 5.0 and an AOD he plans to install it the truck but if he has a 351w in it then he want to keep it and only install the AOD (if possible) It has a C6 in it now.
Any info or tips I can pass along will help.
thanks

the place to measure or you can just look because its easy to tell. look at where the timing cover bolts on to the front of the block and compare that to the cylinder head. S 302 is flush and a 351 has about a 1 1/2in between the head and timing cover. thats the easiest way to tell.
Here's a quick way to tell. Once you've made the comparision you'll never guess again. Take a look at the thermostat housing lower bolt. If it's begind the timing chain cover it's a 302 if it's higher/above the height of the timing chain cover it's a 351 W.
