Question Main seal leak on 4.2L '01

I just did an oil change on this otherwise fine truck, and was alerted of the leak between engine and transmission. I was told it could be the main seal, or a torque converter. Truck has 75,000 miles... What's the dealer going to ding me for? Any advice?

I would check thoroughly around the bottom side of the valve covers. You may have to get under truck and look up with a flashlight. Sometimes oil will even leak out of the base of the oil fill tube after that much mileage. If you ante up and take it to a Ford dealer, at least it'll be covered lifetime. I personally would go to a Lincoln/Merc dealer, they take better care of vehicles in my experience.

If it is the rear main, you're looking at 500-700 bucks I'm guessing.

I hope it's not the rear main. That seal went out on my 4.9L '94 and it cost $1,000 at the ford dealer. If you know someone with mechanical skill, you can fix it for a lot less. It was basically a $35 part and the rest was labor.

Mine weeps a little oil, but nothing serious. I would keep an eye on the oil level through this change, look out for drips and puddles under neath and base our decision on repairing it from there. Mine has been weeping just enough to wet the underside of the transmission housing for 50K miles, but never enough to drip.

If it does drip oil, check out a product called AutoRX. Do a search on it on bobistheoilguy.com. Its a proven product that restores the plaibility of seals. this may help your real main if that is the case.
