I had one in an '85 F150 back when I was in high school. Unfortunately I never could blow it up by over reving it. Its a good engine, just lacking in the power dept.

I agree. I had an 85 F-150 with the I6 in it. When i had it, it sucked cause i was 16 and it didnt have any power, couldnt go faster than 75mph and the carburetor was a joke. When i got rid of it at 176,000 miles, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the truck or engine. THe carb had a faulty choke on it, but that was modified by a mechanic buddy and solved. Its a great engine, its strong, built well and it lasts forever. I have a 360 V8 now, but i actually do wish i had kept the truck as a second driver.

IMHO the BEST all-around engine Ford ever made. I had one in an 88 F150 short bed 4X4. That thing would pull up h@ll by the ROOTS. The license plate was accurate (1PULN4D). I sold it in 97 with 165,000 on it to buy a new RAM and have missed it ever since. I see it around my home town every now and then (two owners later) and it still seems to be going strong. The kid that owns it now looks just as happy driving it as I did when I bought it in 94.

The only thing I could say bad about that engine is the gas mileage. I was hard pressed to get 14mpg out of it (the 33" BFGs didn't help I guess)--But then that's about what the 5.4 in my 02 Lariat does. The low end torque of the fuel injected model that I has was simply awesome.

I had one in an '81 F100 w/ a 3 speed and it was a great motor. I also liked the fact that I could sit on the inner fenderwell under the hood to work on it (which wasn't very often) because it barely filleed the engine bay. It was no rocketship but did have low end grunt. That truck would cruise at 90 MPH all nite & day, it was bulletproof!

I would gladly give up some of the high rpm ponies of my 4.2 for the stump pulling, just off idle torque of the old straight six. Great motor for a truck.

I concur probably the best motor by far, FORD, has built.

but no.... everybody wants horsepower now, so that's what were getting 5500 RPM car motors.

I don't think most old truck motors were good for more than about 4100 rpm

All the power of a 6-banger, with the gas mileage of a 460!

I've owned 2 of them, a '91 and a '92. I only had the 91 for about a year before I traded it for the '92 SCab. My neighbor bought the '91 from the dealer and it still looks and runs as well as the day I traded it. I traded the '92 with over 150,000 miles in '99 for a SCab 4x4, and I still see it driving around town now and then. It was a great motor, but my 5.4 gets better mileage and has a lot more power.

i've never owned a 300 but i'd say it'd pull pretty good with 4.10's it'll be a good motor to have in mud.a little bit lighter than a v-8 i guess so it won't sink as bad.

I agree but disagree, I love my truck and engine but hate it at the same time.

Yes it is a good strong engine, but it has to be the SH*TTYest design ford has ever made, and if there is anyone out there that has done all the work that I have done they know why. Its great how it takes up no engine bay room and everything is easily accessible. But there are some big time f*ck ups. First off the 1piece intake & manifold setup is horrible & a nightmare to work on. Besides being a pain in the a** to take out and put back in, they put the damn alternator next to the first bold on the intake/manifold so ya either have to finagle your way onto the bolt which takes forever, or take all the time moving the darn alternator. And I had not been throw this just once, first time when my engine blew 2 years ago because the #6 cylinder fried the piston (for some god known reason) and I had a carburetor and air helmet filled with oil, so lets see: Had to rebuild the block, rebuild the head, then buy a new carb just because of that luck. all other engine parts where then new, alt, battery, etc. Hmm then a week after that my radiator went and so did the fan clutch, so at this point everything was new under the hood except for the stock trans, intake, header & steering linkage. After that I had a good strong year or so before my manifold cracked and my carb went again. so now i just have a stock intake. Recently I put a complete custom exhaust on it with no cats, 1 flowmaster, and 2 tailpipes and I love it now. Just added a K&N also. Last week I gutted the interior, vacuumed, shampooed the rugs, gave the whole interior a new paint job and its making its way to be a beautiful truck. Now i just recently found some new parts, so i'm going to throw special 2 barrel intake with a holley 2 barrel carb, and a header as well. I think you all are going to love my truck and hate me for having it!

Hope everyone enjoyed reading all my babble

Ha and i forgot, I am only 20 and I had to go through all this already, as you can see I am going to have to keep my truck until it dies
