cat and/or o2 sensor bad?

99 5.4 F150, auto, 4X4, 90K... in the last few weeks I have been noticing the 'rotten egg' smell inhernet to a bad cat and/or o2 sensor. I have not been through this with my Ford so I have a couple questions... is this about the miliage that the cat and o2 would go bad? any other parts to replace? any aftermarket stuff worthwhile? is this, in fact the problem or is it something else? The truck seems to be a bit sluggish lately... it came on so gradually that I didn't really notice at first. Mainly it just seems to downshift in places it used to not... like its starving for power. Fuel consumption is about the same.... thanks for any advice

If you are in the Southeast, you might have gotton some of the high-sulfur fuel that Shell and others inadvertently sold.

Otherwise, just buy your gas from a station that uses a different distributor than the one you have been using. Sometimes its just a matter of the sulfur content in the fuel which the cat can't reduce anyway without creating sulferic acid.
