If you are worried about it getting covered in mud then don't go off road in the mud. I have an open element in mine and I still go offroad. Carry a spare filter and change it if it gets clogged. The stock system will allow water to intrude at a lower water level becasue of the placement of the inlet in the fender well. It is lower than the open element.

i would just go buy one of those procharger things from K&N that goes over the filter, that should keep the majority of the junk out of it if things get a little hairy
