oil interval question, HELP

does anyone here using mobil 1 do 6-7k intervals? i talked to the shop foreman at the dealership in town and his opinion was not to exceed 5k intervals b/c the engine uses about a quart of oil past that. i have a '02 Scab w/ 4.6l and was curious as to anyone's thoughts on that--thanks in advance.

According to comsumer reports 6k intervals are just fine.

An excerpt from the following link:

"In Europe the average engine oil drain interval for current gasoline-fueled cars is about 10,000 miles," explains McFall. "In the United States, indicates the Automotive Oil Change Association, the average drain interval followed by most drivers is somewhat less than 5,000 miles—one-half of Europe's.

I go 6k between changes using M1....... I just check the oil every now and then inbetween....... I also find I need an additional qt after 3k miles. Works out great, because by the time it's ready for another qt, it's time to change the oil anyway....

Works for me... Your mileage may vary!

With full synthetic you can go 7,500 with no problem.

My girlfriend’s Porsche Boxster comes with 10 quarts of Mobil 1 as factory fill, and her recommended oil change interval is at every 15,000 miles!!!

My brother’s new Honda Civics’ oil change interval is 10,000 miles, and that’s with non-synthetic 5W/20.

Mobil 1 will still offer protection at 6000-7000 miles. If someone is still under warranty, they need to change oil according to the Owner's manual mileage and keep records.

US automakers have us on the 3 to 5 thousand-mile trip. I go with it, because it can’t hurt. Major engine warranty work could be a problem if they could prove you didn’t change your oil on their schedule.

6-10 thousand should be no problem. If you doing the upper limit of 10K I would change the filter at 5K or so. Be sure you change your oil at least once a year.

As always be sure to monitor your oil level, regardless of how often you change you never want to let it get below the "add" mark. I usually maintaine somewhere above 1/2 on the dipstick.

I'm changing my synthetic @ 5M right now because of warranty but will definitely go to a longer interval after that. Our BMW regularly went 9M miles before it called for an oil change. Our new Audi calls for a 10M oil change. German engineers SWEAR that more frequent changes are unnecessary and wasteful. We ran a VW GTI on Mobil 1 with 7M intervals, put 250M miles on the car, and it still didn't use a drop of oil between changes at that point. I will be moving to 7M intervals soon.

P.S. On that VW, I switched back and forth between dino and syn. I mixed oil weights. I mixed brands. Despite all of the dire warnings some give about doing those things, there was absolutely NO effect on that car. And I ran the hell out of that VW. It was my autocrosser!! And it screamed @ 3,000 rpm at 60 mph. One very tough little car.
