Question Engine noise

My 88 Ford has a new noise under the hood.
I traced the noise to a cylinder looking thing at the top right side of the engine. The front of that thing has a belt attached to it. The noise occurs when the little silver disk in front of the belt seems to hesitate for a split second, then it begins to spin again. There is no change in idle speed sounds.. just that little click/hesitate sound.
Is this serious? What do I ask a local mechanic to check?
thanks
Beej
PS new noises make me nervous

Thank you Lees... I didn't know the AC was on.:o ...
I don't use the AC much because the engine doesn't like it, and it uses too much gas. I reckon one of the kids had pushed the AC buttton without my noticing it.
The clicking seems to have stopped.
THANK YOU!!
