What type of vehicle do you have?

Do you mean detail the engine on the outside?

wheni clean the engine compartment on my truck, i cover the alternator with a trash bag, wait till the motor is cool of course, and hose it down, then use a diluted mix of water and simple green, or ive found that Scrubbin' Bubbles works well too, spray all over engine compartment and scrub with a scrub brush or old wash mitt. Rinse and repeat then let dry. Then i use some armor-all to dress up all the plastic/hoses, etc and it looks like a brand new motor. Really simple.
