97 351w Question
I'm sure that that if my information here is wrong, I will be corrected. in 96, the 97 f-150 was sold as a new model as well as the older style f-150. the f-250 kept the same body style as the 96. I'm not an expert here but if you want to replace your 4.2 with the 5.8, I would much rather find a 4.6 or a 5.4 to replace the 4.2 or grab a measuring tape, the trinton engines are quite wide, and short, were as the 5.8 might be longer, and skinnyer
Ilive in NJ. like Ca, you can only replace a motor with another model engine only if it was offered by the manufacturer.
I did measure, the 5.8 should fit, and I own it, so in a sense it is free.

I would check the local library and find a manual for that year. It would probably have a run down of the different available engines. The late 90's saw a lot of changes in body styles and engines. Don't forget that you will have to track down an ECM for the bigger engine.
The short answer is the 351 was never offered in the '97 body style. The only motors in the '97 body style were the 4.2, 4.6, and 5.4.
'97 F150's began rolling into showrooms in early 1996. The three F150 factories were switched over one at a time from the old body style to the new.
Thus, the '96 body style was the last F150 with the 351. No '97 F150 got that motor.

Thanks for the info. Too bad, I've got a 351 long rod that would be ideal due to its high torque numbers, 375 plus on pump gas. Owning a newly built motor like that always leads to trouble. Instead of getting rid of it I will do something foolish like getting something to put it in.
