Question stutter and surging

Hi,

I have a 2004 3valve 5.4 with 8,000 miles on it. Sometimes in a parking lot, when your just creping along at near idle speed, the truck feel like it surging or bucking. Driving at 40 mph and up, sometimes it will stutter slightly every few miles or so. This is my first Ford and it’s a real nice truck, but I have never experienced this before. The dealership said bring it in for a day and they will look at it. I am wondering if anyone else has had this happen with the new F150?

Thanks

Congrats on your ride and welcome to the site!! Being its a new truck, let the dealer take care of it. Don't go for the old "that's normal" that they like to tell people when they can't fix the problem!! If it don't feel right, keep on them til they fix it.

JPD,

My '01 Supercab with 5.4 does the exact same thing. Feels almost like warped rotors but is obviously coming from the engine lurking. Have had it back to the dealer numerous times and they say they can't duplicate the problem and that everything is showing "normal operation". Warranty runs out at end of month and I am frustrated. Going to try another dealer before it expires but not looking for any miracles. Truck believe it or not only has 7000 miles on it but has the lunging and a intermittent rough idle at least twice a day. Haven't noticed anything at higher speeds. They say that if no trouble code is stored there is not much they can do and the check engine light has never came on. Best of luck in getting it resolved. At least you still have 3 years to stay on their case. My years as a loyal Ford customer are coming to an end. Let us know your progress.

You might remove all the COP's and blow out the spark plug holes with an air gun. The holes might have water in them if someone tried to clean the engine compartment in a car wash or power washer. I hear that the water might not evaporate out of the holes if oil is in the holes along with the water. Water in the spark plug holes can cause mis-fires.

As new as your vehicles are it almost sounds like you could be having the dreaded Coil on plug problem where the heater hoses leak on the #3 or #4 COP's on the rear passenger side of the engine. This can damage the COP's or introduce water into the spark plug holes.

Look in the 2004 F150 forum,, I remember reading about the same symptoms.
Something about the computer needing reprogramed and problems with the flyby wire throttle control.

Smile Thank You

I’m taking it in to Ford Monday morning and get it fixed (I hope)
Going to tell them about the hesitation and see what they can do.
I’ll post the results Monday night.
Thank you all for your input.

My 04 F-150 has done that very slow surging thing once and it has done the "hesitation/engine cut out" at 40 mph about 10 times now. It is going in Monday. I've only got 1600 miles on mine.

Smile stutter and surging

I took it to the dealer this morning at 7:30 and they had me out in one hour.
The diagnosis revealed a problem with #4 coil; a wire was chafing.
The #4 coil wire was repaired.
The PCM was reprogrammed.
I still need more driving time to say if the problem is fixed for sure because of the inconsistent way, it happened. Some days it would do it several times and other days, it wouldn’t. The tech didn’t notice anything on his test drive, but he only drove it 4 miles.

JPD,

Let us know in a few days if that did indeed correct the problem. Also just to confirm, you never had a "check engine light" or register any codes is that correct? Even though mine is an '01 the symptoms are very similar with the lurking and being intermittent. Thanks for keeping us posted.
