Oil filter question

hey all,
i had a quick question concerning the appropriate oil change interval. right now i am running M1 5w-30 in my 4.6L V8 with the recommended Motorcraft FL-820S filter. I think that Mobil recommends you use their P1 Microfilter (which coincidentally is around $10), but I could not see paying that unless absolutely necessary. my question is: can i go the 6-7K interval with the Motorcraft filter? I am guessing I can go at least 5k, since that is what Ford recommends you can go with that filter setup. any comments or advice would be appreciated. thanks.

I think you could go 6k with the filter but oil filters are cheap. Last time I bought a FL820S I think it was less than $3. Why not just change the Filter at 3000 (Adding back oil as needed by the dipstick) and then new oil and filter at 6,000.

You can move up to a larger capacity Motorcraft FL1A if going to the extended change interval. It looks to be about 50% bigger capacity than the FL820S. I'm considering moving up to it as it costs almost nothing extra and gives a bit more cooling capacity.

Does the Motorcraft FL1A fit a 4.6 liter OK?
