I had a 93 escort that went 190,000 miles and all I did was Oil changes and brakes. I have a 92 Ranger that never has any problems (now at 91,000 miles). My parents had a nissan maxima that always had problems. My point is you can find horror stories on anything so just buy what you like. My F150 has been flawless. So have my dads last 3 since the late 70s.

But you cant really compare a full size truck to a corolla anyways. They are apples and oranges. I mean a truck is meant for pulling corollas.

Hey Unhappy Camper I had the same problem as you had except the ticking noise occurred after 200 miles. I let it go for about 2000 miles hopeing it would go away.

I took it back to the dealer, I wanted a oil change anyway. I told them about my abs light coming on and about the ticking noise on the passenger side of the engine. I have 5.4 l 3v

They called me and said yes there is a problem, we're going to keep your truck for about 2 weeks.

They tore the engine apart and replaced the cam, cam sprocket and lifters on one side. The service manager told me he thought the problem was a bad lifter. But Ford wanted to do the job right.

My dealer gave me a loaner (2003 supercab XLT LB 4x4) They paid for everything, even the gas.

I would keep after them, They will take care of it if you complain enough. BTW I had a early build (7/28/03)

Thanks for the info Mrrich, talked to my service manager on sat. morning, he said ford told them to check cam and sensor. They should be able to tell me something on monday or tuesday. At this point I am kind of in a wait and see position, hoping they will do the right thing.

I appreaciate all the replys I have gotten on here, this is a great forum for ford owners.

OK fellas, here is what I have for an update on my problem.

My ford dealer tried replacing the the cam tension springs,(or rods) and ran into more problems in the engine. After talking to ford about it, they have decided to replace the entire engine. I have been told the new engine wont be here until friday, and I wonder if someone here could tell me how long this should take to swap engines, and also how to make sure its a NEW factory engine.

I have to admit my dealer has tried to do everything possible to keep me happy during this process, has me driving a 2004 lariat that is pretty much loaded. Also is installing mud flaps, bug shield and window guards free of charge.

So, needless to say I am not happy about my truck being at dealer so long, but am confident they are trying their best to work this out in the correct way. I will let you know what happens.

As far as I know, Ford can't replace your engine with a rebuilt unit. I think you'll get a new engine off of the production line.

Its good to see the dealer trying to help here. I think the rental truck and bolt on goodies are a nice touch. In my experiences, the dealers have not gone this far to satisfy a customer, however they probably never have a customer come back with a bad engine in only 10 days.

MY GOD learn to spell. And Your wrong, Its on ford to Prove that the Modification caused the problem. If you Modify your suspension and your Head Gasket goes, there is no relationship there hense ford is going to HAVE to honor their warrenty. If You have blow by in your cylinders and they see and you've Supercharged your 5.4 which Should be N/A, and the new Compression ratio is 13:1 Yea They are going to laugh at you...
SO please...I beg you read up on things before you tell others wrong information and if you are going to continue to give bad info at least write it where others can read it.

back on to the subject for a moment,if its a ticking and gets louder as rpm increases,i'd say lifter, and definitely go for a new truck, shouldn't be hard considering how old it is

and onto the toyota subject, yes they do run for a while with relatively no problems,as do most imports, but the difference between them and domestics, ford anyway,is that when an import finally does die,it's very expensive to fix.look at interference motors, lost a timing belt and you're most likely lookin at a comeplete rebuild.on the other hand you have fords, which mine has 115,000 on it and it is NOT driven anywhere even close to easy and it still runs great, minor problems 99%of which i did myself f**kin with it.and when they die,its relatively inexpensive to rebuild their engines. just my $.02 or $1.25

and crash, ford can replace your engine with a rebuild,if you let em.if they can put a 1.42" singlecore radiator in your truck when you pay for and are told you're gettin a 2" dual core and say it works just as good, then they'll try it cause most people won't know the difference

Thumbs up

Well folks, picked up the truck last night from dealer. The engine sounds great, hope it stays that way. The dealer had the truck from 4-28-04 until 5-17-14 and in that time has replaced the engine, done a few add on items, and said he flashed the computer, will know more on that later, truck feels too new to know yet. However the hesitation when stepping on gas does seem less now.

I am a happy man again, now that I am back in my 2004 FX4, and hope I will not have any more problems.

Hats off to my dealer, I was pretty pissed of when all this began, but I think they handled it as well as the could, other than giving me a new truck.

I will post back later to let everyone know how the engine is holding up

Is a Toyota really a Toyota?

Aren't they just GMs with 'yota badges?
