Coil Packs
My truck is an 02' F150 with a 5.4. It has about 45k on it now. About a month after I got it I started having coil packs go bad on it. I lost about 10 in the first 6 months or so. At the advice of some friends and people on this board, I added a computer chip. I got a diablo chip programmed for my truck. After that the coil packs stopped going bad for about a year and a half. I pulled the chip out about 2 months ago because I couldn't really afford the 93 octane gas anymore and also because I was going to Colorado where they don't have 93 gas. Well yesterday I had another coil pack die on me again. I am about 99% sure it is a coil pack anyway just from past experience. It is stumbling and the service engine soon light came on after running bad for about an hour of drive time.
Anyway, this tells me that it is a problem with the computer. I may be wrong in assuming this but it seems logical to me. I talked to my service guy at the dealer and he pretty much agrees with me, but he says if he tells ford that I had the chip in it, they will try to void my warranty. All they can do is to keep replacing the coil packs until the warranty runs out. I am not sure what I should do.
I would appreciate any ideas or similiar experiences with resolutions.
thanks,
Brian

hmmmmmm, tough to say, depending on how much of an inconvience it is to get the coils replaced i would just do it until nearing the end of your warrenty and try to get the pcm replaced. This way if they void, no big deal.
I would do that, but I depend on my truck alot. I am in sales now and I am going to be driving all over north Texas. It is very inconvienient to have to take the truck in every other week for a couple of days at a time. It just seems like there has got to be a way to get it fixed. All the previous repairs are well documented so it would be obvious that the chip didn't cause the problem. I think the first time it happened was maybe 2 weeks after I bought the truck. I was kind of hoping there would be some obscure tsb or something.
Oh well, I am going to take it to autozone in the morning and verify that it is the coil pack, then take it in to the dealer. I will see what happens.
