k&n backfire?
i put the K&N fuel injection performance kit on my 98 with the 4.6 and the excelleration is king of jerky, not to terribly bad, and at higher rpm's 4500-6000 there seems to be a loud popping noise that seems like it's coming from the kit itself, almost like a backfire through the air filter itself. has anybody had this happen or any ideas?
mrwhitegt, try resetting your computer. With the addition of the K&N, you now have a lot more air flowing into the front end of the engine. The computer may not know what to do with it all or to adjust quickly to it. Let us know what happens after the reset !!! Technically after any mod, you should reset so the computer can relearn with the new equipment.

sometimes if the k&n is over oiled the oil can coat the maf sensor causing false readings. do a search on cleaning the maf.
it is also possible you have a small air leak, go back thru it and check all connections.

Go to autozone and have them run a code reader on it to see if they find any lean codes. If so, then you have a small air leak somewhere. A really small leak past the MAF can throw it off.
Otherwise I'd look into cleaning the MAF to see if that's the problem.

I forgot to plug my MAF in once after cleaning out the intake. I got about the same effect. I'd go with the air leak possibility also.,,,,98

well i just got back from autozone and had the hook it up to the diagnostic thingy and no error codes came back, and i have redone all the connections i don't think it's an air leak. I'm probably planning on replacing the spark plugs
yeehaa that's gonna be fun.

ok i cleaned the maf, i reset the pcm, and i still have the backire prob, engine seems stronger just up untill 4500 rpms. talked to the dealer and he told me the spark plugs wouldn't cause this, but he said for the next for tankfulls to run some fuel system treatment and it may help. anymore thought or ideas guys? i appreciate all your help.
i think at this point i would take it off and put the stock intake back on to see if the problem is still there. process of elimination. the k& n might be over oiled.
another idea might be to take the filter off and take a short drive to see if the problem is still there. a short trip should not hurt anything.
