? about IAC cleaning

Well, it took me 3 trips to autozone and about 3.5 hours yesterday, but I removed the intake, TB + elbow, and the IAC, got all the oil residue out, and it's a good bit cleaner now. I figure I did ok considering this is the first time I've gone this far into my engine.

My EGR doesnt look to be clogged, but I didn't remove it, just the part that the TB is attached to. There was some carbon buildup at the port inside the TB, I dont think it was blocked though. The IAC wasn't too bad, but then again I dont know what "normal" IAC's look like...there was just a little black-ish stuff on the spring and whatnot in there. I sprayed some intake cleaner in there but that didn't seem to do much for it.

In any case, my engine now has a pretty inconsistent idle. It used to hit 600-650 pretty much any time it was warm and at idle. Now, it generally idles at 700, but sometimes it will stay up at 900 RPM.

One thing I did not do was clear the computer (disconnect the battery). Do I need to do this so the computer can relearn the idle?

Thanks...(and yes I tried searching).

If you have any suspicsion that the IAC is your problem then, the next time it doesn't idle properly just give the IAC a sharp rap with a screwdriver or similiar blunt object.

If the IAC is stuck, this will unstick it and the truck will resume normal idle.

If the problem persists, stop beating on the IAC because that ain't it.

Well, I suggested a screwdriver (or similiarly shaped object) because where my IAC is located, a 'hammer type' swing is not possible. It has to be hit in 'spearing' type motion. A jab if you will. And I'm not talking about no puny screwdriver either, it's got to be something Sir Lancelot would have been proud of. It's got to be so big women will want to date you and men will want to be your buddy.

LMAO.

Well the reason I am suspecting it is because it was fine until after I cleaned it along with the TB yesterday.

I probably need to put a new EGR gasket on there, the one that was one there before was chipped and broke in a few places so it probably isn't sealing very well.

Im glad your dad is on top of things!

I reset the computer and I'll see what happens in a week or so (after 4-500 miles).

Might be after the fact but when cleaning throttle bodies on our trucks, they recommend using a cleaner that is safe for the factory coating that is on the inside of our throtlle bodies (think it's teflon or something) regular cleaners will take the coating off. Also it's good to replace the gaskets for the egr, iac etc. once you take them off. I reused my iac gasket and it didn't idle well because the gasket had a leak, after replacing the gasket, all's fine.
Another thing, it's kinda hard to reach, but remove the iac hose where it connects to the t. body and give a squirt of wd-40 into the iac valve, lubricates it and helps the little piston inside slide easier.

I used STP throttle body and intake cleaner. I already sprayed some (ok a good bit ) of it into the IAC valve on that little piston.

How much do those gaskets cost? I am thinking they may be the cause of my problems right now, but I want to see if once the computer relearns everything it will go back to normal.

I know I need to replace the EGR gasket for sure, the TB and IAC ones seemed ok, but a few of the holes on the TB gasket got cracks around them from the screws.

Also, do I need to use any sort of sealer or anything like that? I dont think so since there didnt appear to be any on them when I took it apart.

The gaskets aren' t expensive, when I replaced my iac gasket, Ford dealer charged me about $0.70 for that gasket. You don't need any sealer on them.

Well I got the gaskets yesterday...$5 a piece :\

Will probably tackle it again tomorrow since it's kinda wet out today (not to mention I need to get the tools out of my dad's truck...)

P/N's for the gaskets for anybody interested:

EGR-TB adapter: F6TZ-9D476-DA
TB->Elbow/Adapter: F65Z--9E936-BA
Elbow-> Intake Manifold(?): F65Z-9L437-A

Another thing I wanted to ask:
I cleaned the throttle body and the adapter (thats what the parts guy called it anyway), but there was alot of oil still in the intake manifold(?). Is there a way to clean the rest of that stuff out?
Seafoam?

Will try to take pics tomorrow (hands too dirty the last time and I doubt my dad would want to take pictures for me).

Thanks.

Seafoam is pretty good but I won't worry about it. If you haven't done so already, replace your pcv valve.
