Egr?

I just bought an 89 F150, and am having some problems with it.
It's got the 5.0, 5 speed, and am not sure what the axle gearing is, but taking off in it is a chore. It runs fine once you take off, but it is real doggy, no power during take off. It's almost like it is geared really really high. Lotta clutch feathering going on.
The previous owner said it used to be like that but a mechanic replaced some "EGR components?" and it ran great after that. Doesn't sound right to me, but what do I know. The clutch is brand new and I don't wanna have to replace it again!
I have driven sticks of all kinds for 30 plus years so don't think it's just me! LOL

Well, I think I ruled out the EGR valve, seems to function perfectly. Changed spark plugs today, inspected the cap and rotor, they look fine, still runs like crap on take off.
Looks like 3.08 gears in the rearend, with the manual tranny it should be geared okay, don't think thats it anyway. It has a terrible throttle response from an idle, way to much hesitation, seems to get better as it warms up, any ideas? anybody? Pleeeeeeease?

Jeff,

Do you use the parking brake at all? If you do and the previous owner did not you may have seized it. Does it roll back on inclines at all?

Oh yeah! My driveway has a pretty steep incline, and If I back in I can barely get up the driveway without rolling back and smashing into the house! .
Anyway it rolls back and forward just fine, thats not it. It just has a really poor throttle response, I messed with the timing a little with no change, new air filter, new plugs, new looking cap and rotor, new oil and filter, I'm at a loss.

I had the same problem with my 95 with the 4.9l...everyone who drove it seemed to kill it....I bought the high flow cat back exhaust...before I put it on I took the old exhaust off and drove it for 2 days...it was quiet the first day...eventually blew all the crap out of the cat..got louder and put the gibson exhaust on....Problem went away..Just an idea...BTW did you change the pcv valve?
