'98 F150 with 5.4 running rough at idle, and dies, check engine

Hello, my truck has a problem lately, kinda came on slowly, it used to be intermitten, now its anytime the truck is warmed up and idling for more than 5-10 seconds it starts running rougher and rougher, and will die sometimes!!

I have not changed anything. Anyone know what can cause this? The ford dealer said $85 just to tell me what is wrong

Please help.

Thanks

I know Autozone will pull the codes for you for free.

You really need to get the codes pulled.

Otherwise you are just guessing blindly...alot of problems can have similar symptoms.

OBDII testers go for $200+ or $300+. somewhere around there. Maybe you can find a cheaper one on e-bay.

John,

The first thing to check for drivability concerns is to scan for codes. This is to insure that the problem is not caused by a computer controlled actuator. Once they have been eliminated then you go on to basic mechanical causes. If you do not have easy access to a code reader you could start by cleaning the IAC, MAF sensor and EGR ports. That is a lot of work and it may be for nothing. Engines stall at idle on MAF vehicles are casued by a vacuum leak. A MAF vehicle will simply not idle with a vacuum leak. So if you want to save a lot of effort I would get the codes read.

Regards

A quick and easy check to make on a 5.4 is the pcv rubber elbow on the back of the throttle body.
These things are bad to rot and cause a vacuume leak, rough idling, and throw a code.
Find the pcv valve in the passenger side valve cover, follow the tube back to the back of the trottle body.. with the engine running feel of the rubber elbow and check for vacuume..

Good luck and I hope this is it...

Haha, dug up an OLD thread! I cured it by cleaning out the idle air bypass thing on the back of the intake. Still going strong!

I think you can get an Actron OBD2 reader for about 30 bucks on amazon.com - but high end ones that can read manufacturer-specific codes are still $200.
