towing
I'm in New Jersey and planning on moving back to Montana next month. I have enough stuff of my own to fill my 97 F-150 Extended Cab but now I have the pleasure of trying to get my buddy's stuff there somehow too. I'm contemplating the idea of renting a 24 Foot Uhaul truck and loading my pickup into it, loaded with my stuff, and put the rest of my buddy's stuff around it in the trailer. Any thoughts or ideas? I know if sounds crazy but the military is paying me to move and basically they pay you like a professional mover and the more weight the more money, i.e. a 4500 pound pickup equals some dough plus takes the wear and tear of 2400 miles off of my truck and puts it on the U-Haul. Any comments would be graciously welcomed
It will fit in the truck but how will you tie it down? your truck is about 18¾ feet long and the inside of the truck is 20 feet. That leaves about 6 inches at each end. The first time you slam on the brakes the front bumper of your truck will hit the inside wall of the U-hall. if you take off too fast you risk poking the rear end of your pick up out the back door. You have about the same clearance on the sides. You may gain 6-8 inches if you fold the mirrors. Don't turn too sharp or you will rub the sides of the truck. As far as GVWR you have about 6500 lbs of usable weight. So if your truck weighs 4500 you can safely add 1000 lbs. I would not risk it myself. The weight of the truck is high up and can add to the instability of the truck becasue the weight is not stationary. it will bounce around and casue the truck to tip.

Why not get the big U-Haul and a car trailer. The truck and trailer are heavy enough that you will need a bigger u-haul to pull it. That should be enough of an excuess to get some extra money for the move. If you are allowed to have pro movers, I would do that. I hate moving.
U-Haul has car trailers. Only thing Im not sure about is if they are wide enough (I usually only see cars on them...never seen a truck on one) and if they can hold that much weight.
You could just put everything in the U-Haul, and very little in your truck, and just follow the U-Haul.
Or, as has been said, you could get it professionally moved.

the little u-haul trailers that only support the front tires will not be big enough. they are designed for narrow vehicles like cars. but they may have a flat trailer that you could tie down the entire truck to and have no truck to road contact. just my .02$
when i left the army they paid me by weight and miles. but they wont pay for the weight of a vehicle just the cost of the trailer rental or miles if driven. i moved 1700 miles and got paid $3000. they have a list of thing they wont pay for. one was a second vehicle. there are ways around it though
