Alternator Light at High RPM

Here's one for you...

I was talking to my favorite tech at the dealership the other day, and I asked him what would cause my charging indicator to illuminate when the engine was revving around 4500RPM, usually when passing. Much to my surprise, he said the alternator brushes were going, and I needed to rebuild or replace the alternator.

He said he'd seen it in high mileage vehicles (mine has 90K) before, and his thought was the brushes float on a cushion of air when the rotor hits a certain speed, maybe because the brush springs get weak.

Electrical gremlins! Do you suppose when Ford bought Jaguar some of the Lucas genes got into the mix?
