4.6L 220HP or 4.6L 231HP...how to tell?
I have a 2000 built 2001 model F-150 with the 4.6L. I am wondering how to tell if my 2001 has the HPI 4.6L rather than the 220HP version. Any tips would be appreciated...thanks!!!
If you get a look at the casting numbers on the heads the letters PI will be cast into them.
Turn your front wheels all the way to right and take a peek into the wheel well on the passenger side. You should be able to see the casting #s towards the front. If they say PI like in the pic you got them.
Good luck.

Jackal, if you are interested in dicussing your 1715, please email. I've enabled email in my profile. Apparently, you have email disabled.

- It appears the change for the 4.6 happened during the 2001 model year (going by Wikipedia). Do you think that is true?
- I have to replace my engine... I'm going with a Jasper. It appears the P.I. heads are the ones with the square intake ports on the Romeo version of the engine. I could not figure that out by the VIN number.
- I also need to change the intake manifold because the original is severely pitted (I am told it was due to long-life anti freeze that my local shop talked me into).
- Do you think the aftermarket Dorman 615-278 intake will fit either engine version (P.I. vs. non-P.I.)?
I'm going to try to send this ? to your email as well... as I need to move quickly. THANKS for all your great information!

Sure it is.
My 08/2000 built 4.6 did in fact have PI heads, but not the new seats with integrated seat belts.
I am not familiar with the Dorman, but you may be even better off with the aftermarket is the casting is any better than stock. I spent HOURS gasket matching my al. intake to the TB, lower intake manifold, and heads. Sounds like w/e antifreeze you used didn't have a silica additive to prevent leaching. Good luck!
