SES Consensus

What are the most common causes for an SES illumination?
What I'd like to do with this thread is take a consensus of those who have had the "Service Engine Soon" light illuminate.

Please list:

1) Engine size

2) Milage SES illuminated

3) Cause (Code and/or part replaced)

Maybe we can compile some information, all in one place, for future members to search for.

Thanks all!

The most important thing to remember is that when the SES or CEL illuminates, the codes have to be read with a scanner (97 - on).

Without the codes, anything else is just a guess.

The most common codes will be related to O2 sensors, EGR problems, or vacuum leaks. These are very well covered in previous posts.

That being said, a compiled list of common fault codes with a discussion of the diagnosis and likely repairs is a pretty good idea to help both the newbies and the old-timers who haven't had a particular problem come up before.

Most common codes will be P017X and P040X series codes.
