Engine tick help
Well I took the truck to the dealer and had them listen. They seem to think its some kind of tension wheel inside the engine. But to be sure they would have to pull the engine apart at the cost of 76.00 per hour for maybe 5 or 6 hours. I have two other dealers close that Im gonna try. Any other ideas anybody know what the dealer is talking about? Thanks again!
I tried the stethescope(sp) thing and I could hear the ticking very well in the injectors but I could also hear the injector ticking also. All my plugs are good and tight. I have to say that the dealer wasnt too intereested in helping because I wasnt paying. It almost dosent sound metalic in nature and I can seem to localize it to the front passenger side. Any othet thought? Thanks again!
engine tick
that engine tick as the dealer says could be the timing chain tensioner, but that usually has more of a rolling marble rattle sound. You mentioned the check engine light being on, a loose tensioner will not make the cel come on. POSSIBLY since you mentioned a sucking noise.... left side... sounds suspect of an egr valve which will turn on the cel, make sucking noises and ticking noises. Have a diag done at your local dealer, its well worth spending the money on the daig and pulling the codes since you can spend much much more on guessing. hope this helps. have a great day. kitty
Thanks Kitty. I listened a little harder yesterday and it seems as if is something on the front of the engine on the passenger side. Very close to where the very top pulley is. Also when I turn the truck of The tick seems to stop as the belts turn. Meaning it just dosent stop abruptly . Most likley I will take it to the dealer on next week and have the code red. Is there a way to do it ourselves? Maybe a reader that can be purchased? Thanks again!
Go to autozone and have the codes read for free. Stay away from the dealers that want to tear down your engine to diagnosis. It is an old trick to take your money. JUST SAY NO!! They are old fashioned!!
If the tick is belt related as you stated I would check the belt and if it has never been replaced it might be the issue. The CEL (check engine light) might have been turned on by whatever the belt is slipping on.
Do not do anything else until you get the codes read and post them here. And by all means do not buy any parts related to the code until you post the codes here.

Take the belt off and run the engine for a minute to see if the tick goes away. If it does then it is not engine related. It could be the A/C, alternator, belt tensionner, power steering pump or the water pump.

The following picture showes the direction to push the tensioner. This will release the stress on the belt and you slip it over the alternator pulley and then slowly release the tension on the tensioner. There is a square hole that you slip the end of a ½ drive ratchet or braker bar into to move the tensioner. The ratchet will act as a lever.

These codes are set when the PCM is trying to compensate for an overly rich condition. Some possible causes, are an air leak after the MAF. Possible becasue thay changed the air filter. Improperly seated oil dipstick or engine oil overfill. Again possible becasue of the oil change. Check the oil level when the truck is on a level surface and has not run for a bout an hour. It should be between the hash marks. Make sure the dipstick is properly seated. What else did these guys do during the oil change.
More possible casues are an exhaust leak near the O2 sensor. PCV valve leak, did they check the PCV valve and forget to seat it properly. Vacuum leaks. Did they forget to plug in a line that they accidentaly removed?
MY wag is the PCV valve not being seated properly. It could also allow the ticking sound from the valve cover.

Thanks JCM!! after I read more about the valve.I realize that I have been hearing a strange sound when turning the truck of. Kinda sounds like its comming from the middle of the firewall. Im gonna check the valve tomorrow.Could this cause a tick that changes with engine rpm?
