engine ticking

My `97 f150 has an engine tick that I do not believe is caused by the lifters. I have an idea that it may be something to do with exhaust components
Any ideas
Thanks
Rick

A pretty common thing on these trucks. I think.

One of the first things to check is the injectors. There are many of us who have injectors that tick. The best way to check is to get a hold of an auto stethescope (sp?). On my truck I checked the cam covers, assuming the worst but could hear nothing. So then I figured it was the supercharger I had recently installed. Still I heard no ticking. Then I checked the injectors. They all tick through the stethescope but there were two that were noisier than the others. And they still are today, working fine.

It's a good place to start!

Good luck.

is it a 5.4l ?

if so, this takes some time but could save you a huge headache...

my 98 5.4l started a tick all of a sudden awhile back... i ASSumed it was just your normal lifter/valve deal and let it slide. turned out that a sparkplug was working it's way loose. after awhile it stripped out... see thread below:

SO, you might wanna check to make sure all your plugs are torqued to spec... don't over-tighten though, of course...
