No your 4.6 does not need platinum plugs, you can put any plug in it. Platinum plugs just cost a little more then the rest of them but they last a lot longer.

Both of the 4.6L's (Vin 6 and Vin W) came with a factory Motorcraft platinum plugs and requires a platinum replacement. Most part stores like Autozone are carrying the Motorcraft plugs now. You can get the actual plug number off a sticker on top of your fan cover to ensure you install the OEM plug. They should cross over to a Motorcraft # 432PPM.
The PCV can be after market and usually run $2.50. Deutsh makes a good replacement and the part number is PCV271.

Let me rephrase, technically the engine does not require the plug to run. I've ran copper cores in platinum designed engines that had bad rings because they are harder to foul. The coppers won't last as long, but the main reason for always going with a platinum in a platinum designed engine is to not allow the manufacturer an easy out if you have problems.
In some Ion sensing engine like Isuzu, you absolutely have to run platinum, double platinum or irridium or they throw engine codes.
