Air Force One intake
Air Force One intake
I recently installed an Airforce One stainless intake on my 4.6 engine.
It was supposed to fit without any problem but it didn't. It was too long from the throttle body to the bend and this made it sit almost over the radiator. I cut 2 inches off the intake pipe and solved the fit problem. Maybe because I changed the size it whistles whenever I step down on the gas. I went over the whole install and sealed every nook and crannie with silicone caulk and it still whistles when it draws heavily through the filter.
It sounds like a tea kettle at one certain speed. Above or below this speed it's fine. Any way to tune out the resonance? Or just live with it? Anyone else have any problems with this intake modification?

What your is your truck? I didn't have to alter the intake tube to fit on my 4.6. Did you attach the bracket from the bottom of the intake tube to the bolt in the front of the engine?
That whistle is air moving around the butterfly in the throttle body. The factory intake has a silencer so that you don't here the whistle. I don't know of a way to get rid of it. Mine has done it since day one. I believe it is normal. Turn up the tunes.

ran my af1 on my 98 f150 4.6 for 3yrs no problems, it's now on my 99 expy. (wife traded the f150 for a 04 mazda 6) with still no problems no mods during either install and no whistle.
Hi
My truck is a '97 F-150 4X4 ,three door, ext cab. The only things I have for modifications on it are the intake, a Gibson cat-back stainless exhaust, edlebrock shocks,a Woody's custom drive shaft, and a removable warn winch. Though last fall I took off the bed and sealed the frame and replaced a whole bunch of rusted parts. If you live in the "rust belt" then you know what I mean. I had to replace the spare tire winch, the spare tire rim, the gas tank, filler pipe, the rear brakes and drums, the rear brake lines, the front rotors and calipers, the front brake lines, the negative and positive battery cables, the starter, the spark plug wires, the transfer case shift linkage, the front drive shaft, the stabilizer bar linkage, the head lights, the licence plate lights and the trailer light harness.
Yes I put on all of the brackets and sleeves that came with the Air Force. If I had not cut it it would have been too far forward to bolt the bracket to that bolt on the front of the engine.
Maybe they had the wrong one in the box or something because there was no way in the world that pipe was going to fit unless I cut off the 2 inches. I have a metal cutting bandsaw so I could cut it perfectly straight with no scratching. I just thought it was strange it was such a bad fit. The whistle doesn't really bother me. I mostly hear it when I'm shifting through the gears. The truck does seem to have more power since I opened it up with the intake and exhaust.
