whine.....cant get an answer
whine.....cant get an answer
Hello,
Im having the hardest time trying to find an answer to this problem. I have a 2000 f150 5.4 liter extended cab truck. I am hearing a very noticeable whine. I have read on here about whines associated with speed, but mine is definitely related to the engine. It happens b/w 1500 and 2000 rpms. Im sorry if I have posted elsewhere recently, but this noise is absolutely the most annoying thing I have heard in a long time. I travel A LOT and Im getting tired of hearing it! It is coming from just over the tranny behind the dash I believe. PLEASE HELP ME, I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE.

im accelerating and it happens in any gear during that rpm range....it isnt a whine like my power steering, if you could imagine a cb radio sounds like that has engine noise coming through the speakers, it is similar to that. I actually thought that i had a short in a wire at first. But it is something behind my dash I believe, just over my transmission. I think it may be a vacuum, or something to that affect...but I have no clue
I get a high pitched whine (like a turbo winding up) when it is super cold out in the same 1500 -2500 RPM range whlie slowly accelerating. Only when its cold out though.
I think it may be the accessory drive belt, but haven't changed it yet. I've got almost 80K on the truck, so the belt is ready to be changed by now. The whining may be from the idler pulleys not having the right amount of tension on them.
My second guess is maybe the fan clutch. I've heard stories of these going bad and making a whining noise.

I had a similar noise, it was coming from my IAC valve. Even after I cleaned it, it was still there. Repalced the valve and haven't had it since. Check it out.

I had one come in with the exact symptom and it ended up being the flasher relay humming. Go figure
. It's located under the dash. If you are sitting in the driver's seat, reach straight under the dash with your right hand. You will find the flasher relays in that general area.
It may be your problem or it may not, but take a look.

what is the IAC valve? Also, it may be an accesory belt of some sort but i dont know what that is either. However, mine does not do it when decelerating nor when it is cold. It does it all the time, and is not whether dependant. Im thinking it may be this valve that was mentioned, but I have had some transmission problems, so a belt may need to be tightened in the tranny. My tranny, at certain times, shifts really hard into second gear. It usually happens b/c I was accelerating pretty hard, and let off just before it shifted. Anything similar to that? I have had the fluid "flushed", which by the way is a crock of s**t. It didnt really help the problem at all. Let me know more about this belt, and if you have a similar problem with shifting. Also, let me know about this IAC valve, what it means and where it is, what it does, etc. Thanks.
I just got my truck out of the shop, had a whistle noise @ 1500 RPM's thought is was a bearing somewhere, pulley etc....they replaced my altenator but it was still doing it. not every day but enough to bother me...ended up being a TSB on it. some kind of idler valve...The IAC VALVE to be exact.... it was replaced yesterday. so we shall see if this fixes it. ill post the TSB tomorrow when i get the paper work out of the truck....
It's the idle air control valve located on the passengers side way back behind the throttle body elbow. It's has two mounting bolts and an electrical connector. It's basically an air by-pass valve.
I had this constant like humming sound which sounded like it was behind the dash but turned out to be this valve sticking.
Just happen to see one on ebay yesterday. If I recall right, the dealer sells it for around $85

You can unplug the IAC valve and go for a ride (expect stalling when off the pedal) to check for the noise. You can also take off the serp belt and go for a one minute spin. If the problem can be reproduced in an empty parking lot it might be safer.
I have the exact same truck and had the exact same whine. Took it to the dealer and they did some work around the throttle body inlet tube, was a tsb on this issue. The noise is gone and has not returned. It almost sounded like a speaker feedback that varied with engine RPM.

PCV valve
I was quite annoyed by what I would describe as a constant whine from the engine, and my mechanic friend found the pcv valve was making the noise in a matter of minutes. Replaced and cured. To check this, simply go under the hood with the engine running and grab the valve, if the noise is coming from here you will be able to tell.
