Errors while check engine light off?

Hello,

I have two questions.

1. What does OBD stand for? In 'OBD Fault Codes'

2. Is it possible to have error codes even if the check engine light is off? Because I failed smog solely based on a few OBD Fault Codes.. I cleaned out my EGR tube and reset the battery and the CEL hasn't come back on yet.

Thanks for you assitance.

OBD = Onboard Diagnostic

I've heard of times when the engine misfires and doesnt throw a light (but it does pull a code, and scanning it will show it).

You can always go to Autozone and have them pull the codes to make sure new ones arent popping up.

AutoZone doesn't pull codes in California.. at least that's what the 2 places I went to said..

I guess the option is I can borrow their computer for a $200 deposit.. which I guess is essentially the same thing, just more steps.

Yes! Most problems that occur (that OBD II can detect and store) will not set off your "Check Engine Light". Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) will be stored when the system detects a "problem". Most will not be indicated by the CEL. This is why I bought a code reader, for use as part of "preventive maintenence"(PM). My code reader is built into my SC Microtuner, so it's not only good for PM it is great for FUN.

One of the codes, I believe, says how many closed loop cycles you have been through since last reset. If you just unhooked your battery a few days before the smog tests they may see that on the lists and failed it thinking you were trying to cheat the system. Just a thought

Ah, I didnt know you were in CA.

It might be in your interest to invest in a code reader, or just do like you said, and rent one out on that deposit.
