Failed smog.. and the codes are.....
Smog: Failed functional passed Emissions?!
Hi,
Took my 1998 F-150(115k miles) today to get smogged.
Truck passed all of the emission tests.. but failed the functional!
Why is functional a factor? I mean if the truck passes all the stuff who cares if my EGR flow is insufficient!?
So here's the codes:
P0401 EGR Flow Insufficient
P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1)
P0303 Misfire detected (Cylinder 3) - This is fixed.. code must be old.
So here's my question:
1. I should just try cleaning the EGR hoses first right?
2. Could this Bank 1 too lean message be caused from the first prob regardign the EGR?
3. How do I turn off the check engine light?
4. The smog place said I need to drive my truck around for 2-3 weeks before bringing it back in so the computer can reset itself!?
What a circus!
Thanks for any suggestions.

bank one lean is prolly a bad 02 sensor
yes you can clean out the entire egr system (not just the egr valve) and that should fix your issue. this by the way is very common on your engine/mileage
the reason you need to drive around a couple weeks is AFTER you reset your computer after you fix the above issues your computer keeps track of start cycles after a reset and if you have too few you automically fail the test.

Where are you located? In Texas you pass emissions as long as your check engine light is on. They use a simple scanner, so you can't just take out the MIL lamp. So, what we do is reset the computer and take it for inspection before it comes on again. They have no way of telling WHEN it was reset, just IF it was reset. So, there is no error, there is no problem, and you pass the test.
OR
Do like i do and get it inspected in a county that doesnt do emissions.
I would guess cleaning out your system would solve your problem, just like hcmq said.
Emssions is about one of the most ridiculous concoctions the EPA and government has come up with. Im all about helping the environment as long as it doesnt cost me anything. IMHO, everyone who supports emissions testing ought to sign a card so the govt can track them. Kinda like selective service for the treehuggers. Then they can suck a fraction of their income away (non tax deductible) and put it in a giant fund. then when YOUR truck fails emissions, you just tap that fund and have it repaired.
Anything less than this is downright invasive.
