Fuel Filter Replacement Problems

I need some help!!

1997 F150, 4x4, 5.4L

I have been trying to get the hoses off the fuel filter. I have the special tool, but just can not get them to come loose. The truck has 145,000 miles and I believe it is the stock fuel filter.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to make this job easy for me. I know it should only be a 20 minute job, but the lines just will no cooperate with me.

As you push the tool into the connection push the line in as well then pull apart...try not to pull on the line as your pushing in the tool it won't release

Thanks, I will try again tomorrow when it warms up a little more.

Does anyone think the cold could "freeze" the hose on, or make the springs very hard to release?

I've had them where the chips were not in the proper location in the fitting, not allowing the filter to be removed. I had to cut the ends of the filter and use a pick to release them. It was easier to do this as it allowed access to the coupler and for me to fix it.
This sound similar, be prepared for a mess.

You have to release the pressure in the fuel line first. Go to the fuel rail across the top of the engine and look for a valve with a plastic cap on it. Remove the cap and press the valve inside, similar to a tire valve with a small screw driver. BE CAREFUL, a small blast of fuel will be ejected. Replace the cover and use the tool to remone the in/out connection. Good luck.

I have two types of tools to remove the lines...One is a metal one that's hinged in the middle like a sissors, the other is a series of plastic rings. I find the cheap plastic ring tool much easier to use. I don't know which one you have.
You MUST relieve the fuel pressure like WDP says, or you won't get the filter off. Remember to get a coffee can to catch the dripping fuel and DON'T have a trouble light near the work area or you could easily start a fire.
