Do it yourself electric fans???

I was recently given two new 14" electric fans. I was just curious if it would be enough to use on my 4.6L? I know most of the kits I've seen are 16", but the fans were free, I'd like to try to use them.

any hints, help, suggestions? also, I know it's out there somewhere, and if I just spend some time searching I could find it, but since your here if you know, please share... What else would I need, and where's the best place to get it... (thermostats, etc...)

thanks...

I did my own fan kit using 2 fans I got from a wrecker for $17 each I had to trim the shroud on one end only and they fit perfectly the flanges fo the tauras shrouds even fit betwen the fins and tanks to help hol the fans on. I also bought a thermistor sensor from a 4.6 crown vic cor $5 from the same wrecker. I put it in the intake water pasage on the passenger side front of the intake. I then bought some op amps, resistors, LEDS mni potentiometers etc and put them in a plastic box. I can now adjust the cut in temperature for each fan. I also mounted a bypass switch beside the box which will turn on both fans if I need it. I put the controls behind the plastic cover under the instrument cluster. I set the fans with a infrared heat gun for cut in temperatures. 180 for the first fan then 200 for the second fan.
Costs for this
2 fans $34
Sensor $5
Electronics $25
3 relays (1 for each fan and one for master bypass) $18
misc wiring $15
Total $97
That is in candian dollars so would even be cheaper in US funds
Looks like a factory install I should try and get some pictures for you guys but I don't have a digital camera. Maybe I will make one of those yet as well.

Hey, thanks for the info...

Also, out of curiosity, what are some opinions on the types of probes, wet/dry? It would seem the wet probe would be more accurate, but any other opinions?

I see that Mike at troyerperformance.com has a dual fan kit with either a wet or dry probe (Item #: PPI-DEFCD or Item #: PPI-DEFCW), no fans. At $50 that doesn't sound like a bad deal. Anyone used it? Would this solve all my problems? and if the web probe would be my best choice where is a good place on a 4.6L to tap in with one?

If so, then I would just have to worry about installing my fans (no big deal since I'm a designer in a stainless steel custom fab shop, I can work something up here), and callibrating the thermostat... right?

Am I best off having one fan run off the thermostat, and one off the A/C compressor?

xcr600, pix would be great!

thanks...

The best place for a probe is on the cross over pipe on the intake manifold. It is to the left of the thremostat housing. There might already be a 3/8 NP fitting with a plug. Not sure on the 03's.
