clunking tranny in a 5.4

I tried posting this over in the transmission section and didn't get any response. I am hoping someone around here has some advice...

5.4, 4X4, XLT, SC, 82K - the tranny seems to be shifting a bit more harshly than it did 40K ago when I got the truck. It really only happens occaisionally but sometimes there is pretty rough shift, usually from first to second while accelerating. I change the fluid at the recommended times. Are there any adjustments that can be made to smooth things out or do I just ride it out until it blows up?

sounds like the same problem i have. i have a 99 5.4 with 120,000on the 4r70w tranny. and for the past 40k it has shifted that way and no one could really tell me much. occsionally my OD light would blink but i never had time to bring it in so i would just reset the computer. now i have a leaking head gasket so i pulled the whole engine and tranny. i have posted in the tranny section about upgrading my tranny with a heavy duty rebuild. someone replied and suggested that it is a broken spring so i plan to investigate. i let you know if i find anything obvious.
